Introducing Rely.io’s Internal Developer Portal

Pressed for time? Here’s the TL;DR:

Keeping track of all resources within your Software Catalog is painful and quickly gets deprecated. As an answer, we are launching Rely’s Internal Developer Portal

Main features:

  • Live Software Catalog: your connected and kept-up-to-date inventory
  • Scorecards: to define and push adoption of industry or custom standards across your teams and services
  • Status Page: provide live status information to all internal stakeholders, technical and business oriented
  • Homepage: build the view that fits your needs and groups in one place information you keep an eye on daily

Do you want to learn more about it?

Introduction

A few months ago we announced our Service Reliability Management product. It was built to help organizations turn the adoption of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) best practices from a dreaded task into as much of a frictionless task as possible (e.g. templating or even automating Service Level Objectives (SLOs) definition and tracking at various levels). As we worked with our customers to set them on a path of reliability excellence, there was a common hurdle being met over and over.

As an SRE user put it:

“We try to enable engineering teams on the “business alignment” thinking and how SLOs help bridge this gap. They are receptive to it, the buy-in is genuine, but almost every time conversations get stuck around inventory. They don’t even know exactly what Services they are running at any given point, what operations they are responsible for performing, or how they are linked to other resources.”

For modern engineering teams, keeping track of all components of the software ecosystem can indeed be a daunting task (there is only so much you can achieve in spreadsheets and static documentation pages afterall).

Working hand in hand with our users, we have embraced the challenge, adapted roadmaps and co-built an answer to this pain point: we are introducing today Rely’s Internal Developer Portal (read more about IDPs here), designed to help you navigate the world of DevOps with ease and achieve engineering excellence.

Unlocking Engineering Efficiency and Visibility with Our New Internal Developer Portal

In the fast-paced world of software engineering, maintaining a clear view of your organization's software ecosystem is like navigating through a dense forest without a map. That's why we're thrilled to introduce our latest innovation, Rely’s Internal Developer Portal, designed to simplify the complex landscape of DevOps and provide a single source of truth for your software ecosystem.

The challenges faced by engineering teams are more and more pressing when it comes to managing their software services, infrastructure, and tools. The lack of a live inventory that provides actionable intel about your resources can lead to confusion, inefficiencies, and unnecessary downtime.

Even more staggering is the hurdle companies face when tackling the lack of standardization in processes and operational maturity between services or teams. How then can they uniformly measure performance, push for its increase or for the adoption of new standards?

Rely’s IDP is here to change that.

Introducing the Key Features of Our Internal Developer Portal

1. Live Software Catalog

Our Live Software Catalog is at the heart of the IDP. It facilitates or even automates the discovery of services, infrastructure resources, and internal tools by seamlessly integrating with your entire engineering stack. Imagine having a comprehensive map of your organization's software landscape at your fingertips.

The software catalog simplifies complex DevOps-related questions and eliminates the need for engineers to navigate a maze of different tools. This is most valuable when you are pressed for time, like during incidents, and need to quickly find answers, documentation resources or the right people to which to reach out.

Seamlessly import all of your services and group them by Owning Team for instance.
A single pane of glass for all the information you need to efficiently run and diagnose your services
2. Scorecards

Alignment is key to the success of any engineering organization. IDP's Scorecards automate the assessment of service quality and team maturity. These scorecards keep everyone on the same page by tracking the adoption of operational standards such as production readiness, DORA metrics, and observability coverage. You can now ensure that your teams are working towards a common set of operational standards and track progress live, without the usual communication overhead or having to assess them manually in different tools.

Adopt predefined, industry recognized, standards or create your own.
Easily track which services are meeting standard expectations and which ones need more help to get there
3. Status Page

Transparency and visibility are crucial for maintaining a reliable software ecosystem. Our Status Page offers a comprehensive overview of your product's health. It provides both internal and external status updates for all your services and user journeys. This intuitive interface leverages rich contextual information from Service Level Objectives (SLOs), incident reports, and the golden signals, offering a clear and concise view of performance over specific periods.

Free your engineering teams from disruptions and allow all stakeholders to easily answer questions like:

  • Is there a declared incident for this reported issue by customers?
  • Is it resolved or still being investigated?
  • How was our uptime last month for this specific Service?
Get a live view of your product’s health based on open incident, latency or SLO compliance
Review all your past incidents in a simple timeline, or freely group them by any dimension, like Impacted Services for instance.
4. Homepage

The IDP's Homepage is designed to bring all the essential data together in one place. Developers can easily prioritize their tasks based on urgency and significance. By providing the necessary information for daily tasks, the Homepage minimizes cognitive load and reduces the need for context switching. Efficiency and productivity are at your fingertips thanks to the customization capabilities. Each user or team can feature in their Homepage the information most relevant to them:

  • Wondering who within the teams you manage is on-call today and their scope of responsibility?
  • Need to check on the status of your open merge request or latest deployments?
  • Checking up on the status of open incidents for your Service?
Customize the Homepage to your daily needs and focus on what matters most, like on-call responsibilities
Add a specific view to easily keep an eye on your active incidents until their full resolution

Foster a Service Ownership and Engineering Excellence Culture within your Teams

With the IDP, we're empowering engineering teams to take control of their software ecosystem. Whether you're looking to streamline your DevOps processes, align your teams with operational standards, or gain real-time insights into your product's health, our Internal Developer Portal has you covered.

Rely's IDP provides developers with intuitive, self-service access to DevOps resources and internal tools, ensuring a world-class developer experience. Furthermore, it also offers guidelines and guardrails, empowering developers with the autonomy they crave to ship new services, deploy changes, and troubleshoot incidents while making sure they are following best practices.
This allows your organization to increase their speed while maintaining a high quality bar.

Ready to experience the benefits of the Internal Developer Portal for yourself? Try it now!

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to innovate and empower engineering teams worldwide with cutting-edge solutions.
